I wouldnât be where I am today without SIPA. I use the skills and knowledge I acquired on an almost daily basis. The connections between SIPA faculty and the UN gave me the exposure I needed to get my foot in the door. It was the perfect segue for me and opened my eyes to the reality of working in the field I do. What advice would you give a first-year SIPA student? Network!!! Chat with all your professors about your career plans and ask them to keep their ears open for opportunities. Attend events at Columbia and the UN and talk to as many people as you can. Join professional networks on and off campus and attend conferences on countries of interest to you. The earlier you have an idea about what you want to do after SIPA, the smoother your transition to that reality will be focus on what excites you and what youâre passionate about, and hone in on the international experts working on this. Adapt your papers and research to fit your future career interests. And, donât get fixated on grades theyâre not as important in the whole scheme of things as you may think.

Itââ¬â¢s not so clear what Laura wants but she too needs this person to break out of her shell into reality. The fact that Jim is unavailable to this family was created less out of cruel coincidence but perhaps since the Wingfeldââ¬â¢s donââ¬â¢t deserve normality, their conflicted lives couldnââ¬â¢t handle solutions to their problems, or even hat it would be too easy for Jim to step in and save the day. When Jim leaves their house the Wingfelds, especially Amanda, donââ¬â¢t reflect upon how smoothly their date with the gentlemen caller went, how close Jim was to becoming ââ¬Ëthe oneââ¬â¢, or how they could arrange for more and other gentlemen callers to come around later. The simple departure of their caller exacerbates their problems to a new level and they explode with their pent-up frustration except for Laura. Tom finally leaves to pursue his ââ¬Ëinstinctsââ¬â¢ after his mother devalues his abilities and Amanda tries to comfort Laura although it probably will be the reverse situation in the future as Lauraââ¬â¢s engagement is her sole hope and goal. This is not a happy ending since we can feel the Wingfeldââ¬â¢s continuing issues and inability to reach normality ââ¬â e. g. Tom still feeling his obligations far away and Amandaââ¬â¢s increasing desperation. The only character we feel hope for, of course, is Laura, but weââ¬â¢ll never know if she does overcome her reclusive nature and get betrothed, a task which would resolve everyoneââ¬â¢s problems.

Each period is characterized by having a major idea that is shared among all that is living at the time. Writers and poets that lived in these time periods not only believed in what the others did, but wrote about their dreams and ideas they shared. The age of Romanticism was characterized as a time of love, but if a person was to examine a poem or work that was written during this time period they will realize it was not just a time of love at all. The Romantic period was gilded to be happy and peaceful, but it really was a time of revolt, world wonder, and the rejection of intellectualism. About one hundred and fifty years before the Romantic period was the Restoration time period. Poets and writers during the time wrote in a dull style that had very little imagination. They wrote of actual occurrences and told things the way they were. Toward the end of the Restoration and into the Romantic period, writer and poets began to write creative stories and poems that seemed to contradict the literature from the time before. Poets like Coleridge would write of unusual or supernatural things, and writers like Mary Shelly who wrote the gruesome tale of Frankenstein. One example of a supernatural idea is in Frankenstein when the lead character Victor Frankenstein says I had glazed on him while unfinished; he was ugly then; but when those muscles and joints capable of motion, it became a thing such as even Dante could not have conceived. The poems and stories of this time are so different from the Restoration time period, a person can only fathom that the writers at the t ime are just revolting from the time before.
